Great Actions Deserve Recognition

That’s why we launched the Green Paw program—to shine a light on the everyday efforts clinics are making to care for animals, support their teams, and protect the environments we all share. Green Paw is an accessible, entry-level starting point that helps clinics across the USA and Canada learn together, celebrate progress, and strengthen a growing sustainability community. And this is just the beginning: we envision Green Paw as the first in a future series of tiered certifications that will continue elevating sustainability across the veterinary profession.

Process for Obtaining Green Paw Certification

  • Download Forms

Access a ZIP file containing ten fillable PDF documents—each outlining the requirements for one Green Paw action. Explore them at your own pace and get a sense of what sustainability looks like in practice.

  • Do Awesome Things

Work with your team to choose and complete the actions that make sense for your clinic. The Green Paw activities loosely follow the Pathway to a Sustainable Clinic, helping you make practical, achievable changes that enhance animal care and reduce your environmental footprint.

  • Submit Documentation

Once you’ve completed the ten actions, upload your forms to share the great work you’ve done. Your clinic will be recognized through the Green Paw program and celebrated as a leader in veterinary sustainability.

The 10 Actions Required for Certification move along the Pathway to a More Sustainable Clinic

  • Initiation of clinic sustainability efforts starts with an informed team. Here we are looking for evidence that you have convened a team, discussed group-related processes and completed the ‘Pathway to a More Sustainable Clinic’ short course as a foundation for the ‘Green Paw’ certification.

  • Make informed decisions by assessing your clinic’s current environmental footprint and identifying opportunities to reduce it. Collect objective data to serve as benchmarks and gather resources to support your sustainability goals.

  • Using insights from Action 2, identify five sustainability activities to implement in your clinic. Activities can be behavioral or physical, but must cover at least two of the five categories: energy, waste, water, procurement, and transportation.

  • Implement the five clinic sustainability activities selected by your team. The five actions must address at least 2 of the five categories (energy, waste, water, procurement and transportation) in the ‘clinic’ section on the ‘Pathway to a More Sustainable Clinic’

  • Communicate your sustainability efforts internally and externally to maximize impact and awareness.

  • Stay involved with the broader veterinary sustainability community by signing up for the VSA newsletter and participating in ongoing learning opportunities.
